Q&A with Michele Gorman
Author Q&A with Michele Gorman
1. When did you first know you wanted to be a writer?
When I was a child, my Dad went to work at 3 a.m. I would often be writing stories on looseleaf paper that I stapled together to make a book. In order to not wake my siblings, I wrote in the hallway. When he passed by, I knew I had to go to bed and get some sleep! I’ve always loved writing, whether it be creating fiction and living in that world for a while, or crafting nonfiction so that it is entertaining and interesting.
2. Do you have a favorite writing routine?
Early in the morning when I don’t have much planned for the day (a rarity since I’m a teacher) or if I can’t sleep- those are my writing times. I’m always people watching to get ideas for my next story!
3. I love all of your writing. What was your inspiration for your newest release, Last Right?
The inspiration for Last Right was the idea that no one lives a perfect life. We all have wonderful and not so wonderful things about us… it’s the human condition. And wouldn’t it be awesome if someone got several different perspectives for their own obituary? It’s about looking at the whole picture and hopefully seeing the good outweighing the bad.
It’s also about the idea that there’s always hope. Hope to turn a life around. Hope to repair a relationship. Hope for forgiveness.
4. Do you have a favorite fictional character?
Right now? Jax. He’s my middle school kiddo who’s struggling with life. I work with middle schoolers and a lot of what they face would be tough for an adult who has the skill set to deal with hard things. Kids are resilient and that is my favorite quality to write about.
5. Do you have another book in the works, and if so, can you tell us a little about it?
I’m writing a book about a middle schooler (Jax) who is just very much on the struggle bus with life, and none of it his own making. The story shows perspective from the student as well from the teacher who will hopefully help see him through this hard season.
5. What impacts your writing?
I’m always people watching and thinking up intricate ways to describe people. I think about what I want readers to know that maybe I didn’t know. I take basic ideas or lessons and create a story around them.
